VEGGIE SEED HAUL! Heirloom and Rare Varieties!

I’m so excited that gardening season is here! I finally got all of my seeds in the mail and I thought it would be fun to do a seed haul and show you everything I bought. I ordered my seeds from Seed Savers Exchange, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, and Johnny's Selected Seeds because they have a lot of fun heirloom, historic, and rare varieties. I love growing fruits and veggies that you can’t get at the grocery store and you might not even be able to find at your farmers market. All of the seeds in this haul are new to me and I'm excited to see how they do in my garden this year.

What is Intuitive Eating?

More and more people, including dietitians, are talking about Intuitive Eating (IE), but what exactly is intuitive eating? In this video, I'm going over the basics of intuitive eating and what it includes, explaining how it came about, and talking about how intuitive eating can help people. A lot of people think that intuitive eating is just about listening to your hunger and fullness cues and that to be an intuitive eater you simply need to eat only when you're hungry and stop eating when you're full. That's not what intuitive eating is though. It isn't a diet based on rigid rules and while listening to your hunger and fullness are two principles of intuitive eating, there are ten principles total. There's a lot more to intuitive eating than just hunger and fullness and I'm breaking it all down for you in this video.

SMALL Healthy Changes Can Make a BIG Impact!

For a lot of people making healthy lifestyle changes can seem daunting or overwhelming. It can feel like you need to make all of the changes you want to make at once or like you need to some giant overhaul. The truth is, this sort of thing rarely works in the long run. The new healthy lifestyle changes might stick for a little while, but eventually it all becomes too much to keep track of and you end up just going back to whatever you were doing before. Instead, try making small changes one or a few at a time. This makes things much more manageable and allows you to focus in on the change you're trying to make.

Food Is NOT Medicine! The Problems with OVERSTATING the Role of Nutrition

You've probably heard the idea that food is medicine or that food should be medicine, but that idea can cause some real harm. As a dietitian, I know that food can definitely have an impact on health in general and that it can be important in the treatment of illness and disease. Medical Nutrition Therapy helps a lot of people heal from serious injuries, treat conditions, and manage symptoms. With that said, the idea that food is medicine sometimes gets taken too far. Things become dangerous when people turn to food as a cure for every illness and turn down medical treatment in favor of a certain diet. It's even more dangerous when that person promotes what they're doing to the public. We've heard multiple stories about people who have used social media to advocate for unproven food based treatments for things like cancer and brain tumors. In some cases, these people didn't even have the condition that they claimed to have and were just telling a story to get followers and make money. I'm covering all of that and more in this video.

A casual chat about Girl Scout cookies and something on my mind.

I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed and stressed here lately, so I wanted to do something a little more casual. So, let's talk about Girl Scout cookies and the types I got this year! I also wanted to talk about one thing I think is contributing to the way I'm feeling: the seriousness of so much of the food and nutrition talk out there. There are definitely serious topics to cover when it comes to nutrition, but I also think we need to make room for stuff that's just fun. Our brains need a break.

Healthy Grocery HAUL! What a Dietitian Buys at the Store!

Ever wonder what a dietitian or nutritionist buys at the grocery store? Today, I'm showing you! In this video I'm showing you my healthy grocery haul from this week's shopping trip! This grocery haul is on the smaller side for me, but it will give you an idea of some of the items that I like to purchase. I'm shopping for two people, me and my husband, but I think you'll find this helpful (or at least interesting) no matter how many people you're grocery shopping for in your house.

Healthy Airplane Travel Snack Ideas!

When you're flying, it's a good idea to have some snacks packed. If your airport has some food items that you love, that's awesome, but there are still some reasons why you might want to bring your own food with you. Maybe you have a tight schedule and won't have time to buy food at the airport. Maybe you don't want to spend money on airport food that is more expensive than what you can buy elsewhere. Maybe you just want to be prepared in case your flight gets delayed or you get stuck on the tarmac for an hour before your plane even takes off. Whatever your reason, packing some snacks with you is a good idea. A lot of people think that you can't bring food through airport security or are unsure about the TSA food rules and regulations. The good news is, food is absolutely allowed and you can bring it through security. The only thing you need to be careful about is any liquid or spreadable foods. They have to follow the same guidelines as any other liquids you're packing. In this video, I'm sharing some of my favorite healthy airplane snacks. These are all easy to pack and you probably have several of them in your kitchen already! I hope these airplane travel snack ideas help you when you're packing for your next flight!

Let's talk about Weight Watchers' targeting teens... #WakeUpWeightWatchers

Weight Watchers recently announced a new promotion targeting teens. In the Summer of 2018 Weight Watchers will be offering free memberships for children ages 13-17. Weight Watchers is a diet program that is based on a points system and is basically a spin on calorie counting. Diets in general aren't healthy, but they're especially bad for children. I find this promotion to be incredibly troubling considering all of the negative impacts that dieting can have, including the development of eating disorders.

If you'd like to share your thoughts about this online and let Weight Watchers know that this new promotion for teenagers is NOT ok, use the hashtag #WakeUpWeightWatchers in your posts.

PROBLEMS with HALO TOP and other "Healthy" Ice Creams | Registered Dietitian

Halo Top and other diet ice creams are quite popular and there are more "healthy" ice creams coming out all the time. But diet ice creams in general and Halo Top more specifically have a lot of problems. Through their marketing, Halo Top promotes a diet mentality that encourages people to ignore their body's own cues and instead "eat the whole pint." They also promote a good food/bad food way of looking at things and even use moral and religious terms and symbols in their advertising. Even the name Halo Top ties the food to this message about morality. On top of all of that, the idea that we even need diet ice cream is an issue. There's nothing wrong with eating regular ice cream.

CVS to Stop Altering Images in Beauty Ads + Pushing for Industry Transparency

CVS has announced that they are changing the way they approach editing and retouching images in advertisements for beauty products. As part of this new effort, they will be using a new symbol that they are calling a Beauty Mark to indicate that an image has NOT been edited to change things like the model's shape, size, proportions, skin color, eye color, and wrinkles. Their goals is to only use images that have not been altered in such way for their own products and then require transparency for any brand that is sold in their stores by the year 2020. CVS says that they want to work with people in the beauty industry to set more clear guidelines for this effort. I'm excited to see this change as we come to realize the negative image that media can have on body image and how it can set unrealistic beauty standards. I'm also interested to see hoe brands adjust to these changes at CVS and how this sort of thing might influence other types of media, like food photos.
