How We Decide Which Health "Experts" to Listen To

I recently saw some dietitians talking online about an article that listed the 100 most influential people in health and fitness. Their discussion was about the merits of an article that lists health "experts" based on their level of influential rather than the accuracy of helpfulness of what their message. What I want to talk about today though is the idea of health influencers and how we decide who to listen to and who not to listen to. Unfortunately, it isn't always based on someone's expertise or the evidence for what they're promoting.

MAY GARDEN UPDATE! Berries, Greens, and Dodging a Tomato Disaster!

It's time for another garden update! We're already having some successes and failures in the garden this year, but it's all good because it's all experience we can learn from. Some things are growing, some things aren't, and I have a big update to the tomato and pepper disaster I shared with you last month. The whole situation was quite frustrating, but I'm happy to report that I think we're going to be able to bounce back from it. Some things might be a little later than I would like, but it's ok because we're still going to get lots of yummy produce!

For a point of reference, I'm in Virginia in Zone 7. All of the plants in the garden we either seeded directly or started from seed inside. I like to grow a lot heirloom varieties, which means lots of interesting shapes and colors!

HEALTHY WEGMANS GROCERY HAUL! What a Dietitian Buys at the Store!

Ever wonder what a dietitian or nutritionist buys at the grocery store? Today, I'm showing you! In this video I'm showing you my healthy grocery haul from this week's shopping trip to Wegmans! This grocery haul is a good example of what my grocery shopping is like this time of year. Now that we are in farmers market and gardening season, I buy a lot less at the grocery store. Most of my produce is coming from the farmers market and garden right now, so the store is just for filling in the gaps and getting the items I can only get at the store. I'm shopping for two people, me and my husband, but I think you'll find this helpful (or at least interesting) no matter how many people you're grocery shopping for in your house.

No, You SHOULDN'T Try Kim Kardashian's Diet

Kim Kardashian is on a new diet, so of course people are talking about it. The specifics of her latest diet really don't matter because this is not a one time thing. Kim has gone on many diets in the past and is likely to go on more diets in the future. What I'm talking about today applies to any diet that Kim Kardashian tries because, no matter what she's doing, dieting isn't healthy and you aren't going to look like her if you do the same thing as her. Kim Kardashian is one of the most visible and influential people in our culture right now. That means that whatever she does, including dieting, gets lots of attention and create ripples in the world around us. For that reason, I think this is something we need to talk about.

One of the WORST Places for Diet Talk

Diet talk and the diet mentality are all around us, but there are some places where diet talk and the diet mentality seem to thrive. One of those places is health fairs. As a dietitian, I go to a lot of health fairs and I often hear a lot of diet talk while I'm there. It comes from both people attending the health fair and vendors at the health fair. Unfortunately, because dieting and many other unhealthy behaviors are often promoted and encouraged in our culture as the healthy thing to do, a lot of those things pop up in places where health in the focus.

Does Coffee Cause Cancer?! | Registered Dietitian

Concerns about coffee and health always seems to be floating around, but a lot more people are talking about it after the recent ruling of a California judge. In relation the Proposition 65, a California law, a judge ruled that coffee shops need to post a warning that coffee can cause cancer. All of this is because of acrylamide, a compound found in coffee and other foods when they are cooked at high temperature. So should we stop drinking coffee? And does coffee actually cause cancer? That's what we're talking about in this video.
