Coconut Oil is PURE POISON?! | Registered Dietitian

The latest nutrition headline to take over the new is "Harvard professor says coconut oil is pure poison." I've been seeing it everywhere and I know you have to, so we're going to talk about it. This sort of this is annoying and frustrating for me because it's food fear-mongering and contributes to all of the confusion and anxiety that so many people have when it comes to food and nutrition. I have a lot of thoughts on this whole situation and I think it's important to also talk about coconut oil and health and why someone might say something like this. Let's get into it.

One Thing That's STOPPING You From Eating Healthier!

There are many different barriers that can get in the way of healthy eating. Access, income, and cooking skills are all things that can make healthy eating more difficult, but there's one thing I see in our culture at large that stops a lot of people from eating healthier: the idea that health food doesn't taste good. This idea that healthy food is gross is something that I see again and again when I work with people one-on-one or in groups, when I talk to people at health fairs and other events, and even in my personal life just chatting with people about food. Our preconceived notions can have a serious impact on our behavior, so let's talk about where this idea comes from and what we can do about it.

Make Meal Time with Kids LESS STRESSFUL!

For a lot of parents, eating with kids and meal time with kids can be stressful! Dinner can dissolve into battles over how much a kid is eating or which foods they're eating and it's no fun for anyone. Parents can feel like they have to work to get food into their child or worry that their child isn't eating enough of certain foods. So what can parents do to help their kids eat well and learn to like a variety of foods without all of the stress and fighting? The answer is for kids and parents to each do their own jobs at meal time and not try to do what the other is supposed to be doing. This is called the Division of Responsibility. It's a framework developed by a dietitian named Ellyn Satter and it makes it clear and easy to understand what the parent is responsible for at meals and what the child is responsible for.

HEALTHY GROCERY HAUL! What a Dietitian Buys at the Store!

Ever wonder what a dietitian or nutritionist buys at the grocery store? Today, I'm showing you! In this video I'm showing you my healthy grocery haul from this week's shopping trip to Wegmans! This grocery haul is a good example of what my grocery shopping is like in the summer. Now that we are in farmers market and gardening season, I buy a lot less at the grocery store. Most of my produce is coming from the farmers market and garden right now, so the store is just for filling in the gaps and getting the items I can only get at the store. I'm shopping for two people, me and my husband, but I think you'll find this helpful (or at least interesting) no matter how many people you're grocery shopping for in your house.

Proud of NEVER Eating Certain Foods? What's Going On Here?

Something I've been thinking about lately is adults who are proud of never eating certain foods. In some cases, these are adults who have never even tried a certain food or food group in their entire life. You might call this extreme picky eating or adult picky eating, but it seems a little bit different to me. That's because some of these restrictions don't necessarily have to do with food preferences. Sometimes, it's something that has become a part of that's person identity and so they just keep doing it with no real reason other than it has become a part of who they are.

Can Coffee Make You Live Longer?! | Registered Dietitian

A new study published in JAMA is getting a lot of attention! This new research seems to show that coffee drinkers live longer than those that don't drink coffee. On top of that, the benefits seem to increase the more coffee a person drinks! So what's the deal with this study and what does it mean for us? Is coffee the secret to a long life? Should we all be drinking more coffee? Not exactly.

Can You Be TOO Interested in Food?

Lots of people are interested in food, including me, but can an interest in food go too far and become something that's unhealthy? Yes! We have so many messages about food coming at us all the time including promotions for diets and lots of entertainment centered around food and cooking. With all of that, it can sometimes seem like it's perfectly fine or even healthy to be thinking about food all of the time. The truth is though, it isn't healthy at all. Being obsessed with food or preoccupied with food is a real thing, so let's talk about it.
